2012 is set to be an exciting year for the UK despite gloomy predictions for the economy - and homes trends are reflecting this air of excitement and optimism in a big way.

Miami
This trend is all about having fun with your home by bringing a touch of East Coast glamour to our shores. The main focus of this look is contrasting a backdrop of brilliant white with splashes of flamingo pink and azure blue. Accessorise with flamingo motifs and sleek, minimal furniture. This look is also perfectly suited to outdoor living with plenty of garden furniture and accessories adopting this look for spring/summer 2012.

London calling
Our capital city is going to be the centre of attention this summer thanks to the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Inevitably shops will be awash with Union Jack paraphernalia, and while red, white and blue will be hard to ignore, our patriotic trend of choice is one that focuses on all that is good, great and iconic about London. Think Routemaster buses, black cabs and crown motifs, plus lots and lots of London skyline and map prints.

With most households having to cut back, our taste for purchasing throw-away items is fast losing its appeal and the desire to buy well-made, artisan pieces of furniture and accessories is gaining in popularity. Rustic and unique accessories sourced from car boots and auction houses, or from specialist retailers, such as Pedlars and Re-found Objects, should be paired with muted tones and organic fabrics. This trend also ties in nicely with the nations new-found passion for craft and up-cycling.
