Expert Advice: Richard Randall
Stylish sixties
Image: Harlequin
'I love the Sixties era because it was a time when people were decorating their homes with interiors that looked great, and not just for practicality.
A Sixties vibe can work in any room and is sure to add a designer edge. The colour palette you choose for this look could be primary tones - from acid yellow to petrol blue - or you could opt for a monochrome colourway of contrasting black and white.
Think bold colours and interesting geometric patterns. With so much pattern available on accessories, furniture and textiles, high street stores are full of product to help you achieve this individual look.
Geometric pattern plays such a strong role in a 60s scheme, so introduce it wherever you can. Fabrics used for window treatments, on cushions and upholstery can all be patterned and also have a relaxed feel about them - so a slight clash of pattern on pattern is totally allowed. There are hundreds of wallpaper patterns around to chose from, look out for geometric patterns and wallpapers with a retro feel.
Lighting took on a presence of its own in the 60s, so invest in statement lighting from standard lamps to oversized domed shapes, which will add a design feature and come in many finishes from polished chrome and wood to brightly coloured plastic.
This is all about making a statement, so be brave with your selections and create a space that's full of energy and individuality.'
Richard's top tips:
Funky shaped and coloured accent furniture will add zing to a dull corner. Look out for retro looking armchairs and one off stand-alone pieces of furniture.
Don't be afraid to clash pattern and colour, this look is about an eclectic feel
Let your walls sing and hang a retro-style bold patterned wallpaper. There are lots available on the high street and be sure to check out a company called E W Moore for the real deal
Deep browns and mustard yellows and oranges work well together and were hugely popular in this decade
Hunt around car boot sales, flea markets and charity shops for items from the Sixties for that real authentic vibe
To give this trend a rich tone, introduce wooden bowls and vases, wooden lamp bases and chairs
Detailing is vital - patterned rugs, printed accessories and blocks of bold colours will help you achieve the desired look
