Achieve a family-friendly kitchen
The kitchen is often the main hub of activity in the home, so it’s essential that yours is hardworking as well as a stylish space. If you’re starting from scratch, consider designing a layout that will work for the whole family, with as much storage as you can fit in. It’s also possible to adapt your existing kitchen by making simple changes, so read on for our expert advice.
Safety checklist
Be safe not sorry – follow these handy hints to help avoid any accidents
* Choose non-slip flooring, and always wipe up any spills as soon as possible.
* Store all knives and other sharp objects in one place, out of the reach of children.
* Wash tea towels and dish cloths at a high temperature to eliminate any bacteria.
* Never leave appliances, such as blenders or electric knives, plugged in or within reach.
* Beware of excess wires hanging over the edge of a worksurface – children could easily pull them off.
* Make sure bleach and other cleaning products are kept in a locked cupboard, or one that children can’t reach.
* Fit child locks on any cupboard doors containing items that could be dangerous.
YH top tips
When designing a kitchen consider a hard-wearing worktop, and avoid high-gloss units as they have a tendency to show every fingerprint.
